Cookbook- Varsity Club - Celebrating USI's 50th Anniversary

Item Description
In conjunction with the University of Southern Indiana’s 50th Anniversary, the Varsity Club has published a cookbook, Celebrating USI’s 50th Anniversary Through Cooking. The cookbook contains history of the USI, Varsity Club, and Athletics, as well as over 330 delicious recipes! The cookbook is a collection of recipes from Varsity Club members, coaches, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, and friends of the University. The cookbook will be sold for $25.00, and all proceeds from the sale will help support USI Athletics. The Cookbook is comprised of Janet Werner – Chair, Cindy Renschler – Vice Chair, Yvonne Floyd, Penny Goshert, Paula Nurrenbern, Hunter Slade, Linda Willis, and Donita Wolf. The committee expresses a sincere thanks to the USI Arts Department Class ART332 Digital Illustration for a terrific job in illustrating the cover and the recipe title pages. The project was supervised by faculty members Adjunct Professor Eric Shelton and Assistant Dean/Associate Professor of Art, Joan Kempf deJong. Also, a special thanks to the USI Archives, Barbara J. Goodwin, USI Photography and Media Department, and Alpha Graphics for their contribution of time, photos, artwork, materials, and printing of the cookbook. The Varsity Club Cookbook Committee is deeply grateful to the many people who dared to share their best – and in some cases highly confidential – gourmet masterpieces for this unique collection of culinary delights. Without their cooperation in generously giving their time and energy in collecting and submitting the recipes, this project would not have been possible.

¡Ánimo!: Living in Different Worlds - These gripping stories portray the coming-of-age of a youngster who, with his parents, overstays his visa in the U.S. right after World War II. Told in engaging and moving vignettes, the writer recalls his efforts to surmount the hurdles of living in two different and bewildering worlds. From childhood to grandparenthood, he smoothly moves back and forth in time, sharing the cross-cultural experiences and travel insights that shape his being. He lays bare his feelings, prompting out-loud chuckles and tender, teary-eyed moments. He reveals his thoughts on family, friendship, bullying, education, immigration and service to others. Having learned English as a second language, his own distinctive voice and phrasing enrich the telling. He incorporates impactful literary references, music and ethnic foods to reflect the customs and flavor of the times his stories depict. He vividly recounts his battles with relentless health disorders and how he finds the ánimo (courage), buoyed by family love, to trump life’s mishaps. Here are valuable life lessons. These fascinating, heartwarming and uplifting vignettes are thought-provoking and elicit lively conversation.

Item Description
Eenglish "Loathly Lady" Tales - “In the earliest versions [of the Loathly Lady tales], the Irish sovereignty hag tales, her excessive body allegorizes the nature of sovereignty; the Loathly Lady is the shape of success in power contestation. Because the vehicle of the allegory is gendered, however, and because the motif’s fictional flesh is sexually active, these ideas about control are entangled with personal power politics. These factors make the motif curiously promiscuous, an intersection of ideas that generates other ideas, sometimes unexpectedly, always provocatively. . . . “This volume concentrates on the medieval English Loathly Lady tales, written a little later than the Irish tales, and developing the motif as a vehicle for social ideology. Geoffrey Chaucer’s "Wife of Bath’s Tale" and John Gower’s "Tale of Florent" are the better known of the English Loathly Lady tales, but "The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle," the balladic versions—the "Marriage of Sir Gawain" and "King Henry" (and even "Thomas of Erceldoune")—all use shape-shifting female flesh to convey ideas about the nature of women, about heretosexual relations, and about national identity.”—from the Introduction

New Harmony Then & Now -- New Harmony Then and Now is a photographic and historic celebration of two of America's great Utopian communities located in New Harmony, Indiana. The Harmonists, started by Reverend George Rapp, labored to provide physical, intellectual, and spiritual wealth for its members. Ten years later, the Owenites, founded by Robert Owen and his partner William Maclure, settled there, intent on improving humanity through innovations in social theory, educational systems, and discoveries in natural science. Though Owen's communal experiment would not endure, a new social frontier prospered. Today, New Harmony remains a haven of promise, a village that honors its progressive heart. Intellectuals as well as artisans are drawn to this place of science and spirit.
